The Harlem Family Institute provides low cost high quality psychoanalytic psychotherapy training.

The institute is preparing to apply for New York State approval as a license-qualifying institute. Meanwhile, it already offers course work, supervision and training analysis that aim to meet the requirements to apply for New York State licensing as a Licensed Psychoanalyst.

Although the institute will help any graduate who wishes to apply for state licensing, the application process is the responsibility of each HFI graduate once he or she has accrued the necessary hours and courses required by the state. The state's requirements are posted on the website of its Office of the Professions: http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/mhp/psyanllic.htm.

HFI offers two programs, beginning in September, for trainees at different career levels. Applications and supporting materials for these programs must be received by May 31:

  • Program in Psychoanalysis,
With Emphasis on Child and Adolescent Work.

Our main program, for trainees who hold at least a master's degree, usually requires a minimum of four and a half to five years' part-time work. After graduating from the program with at least 300 client-contact hours and other clinical and course-work accomplishments, most candidates will need to continue their clinical work to meet the state's requirement of 750 client-contact hours to be eligible to apply for licensing.

  • Post Graduate Two-Year Program
    in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis
    .

This program is designed for psychotherapists who have completed training at an accredited psychoanalytic institute and want specific training in working with children or adolescents.

To learn more about these programs, read on or use the links at left for individual program description.

Course work and workshops are designed to provide a wide-ranging approach to psychodynamic interventions and a comprehensive introduction to psychoanalytic thought. Self-reflection, psychotherapy, and supervisory sessions support a candidate's personal growth and development as a psychoanalytic practitioner. Some typical training provisions are:

  • In all programs, trainees learn the essential elements of play therapy, while expanding and deepening their knowledge of psychoanalytic theory and technique. Each therapist-in-training is assigned weekly sessions in a school with an equipped play-therapy room.
  • A Harlem Family school liaison assists the candidate with referrals and offers on-site assistance for the duration of the training.
  • Each trainee agrees to provide six clinical sessions per week, seeing children or adolescents and holding collateral sessions with others of importance to the child as necessary.
