THREE-YEAR
PROGRAM: PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY TRAINING
The
Three-Year Program is designed for candidates who hold
a master’s degree, and are beginning a career
as a therapist.
After
completing the Three-Year Program Candidates may continue
on for an additional year in the Four-Year
Program.
Candidates
learn the essential elements of play therapy while expanding
and deepening their knowledge of psychoanalytic theory
and technique. Each therapist-in-training is assigned
a school placement that has a therapy room equipped
with materials for weekly sessions. Since schools are
convenient centers of neighborhood life, HFI therapists
are able to maintain consistent connections with the
children and adults they counsel. An HFI school liaison
assists the candidates with referrals for the duration
of their training.
Each candidate agrees to the provision of 6 clinical
sessions a week. Clinical hours are used to treat children
and adolescents, with collateral sessions with others
of importance to the child.

Requirements
Applicants
should hold at least a master’s degree in a field
requiring clinical experience. According to current
New York State guidelines, only people holding these
credentials may receive certificates of completion.
In
interviewing candidates HFI looks for broad humanistic

intellectual development, and a high capacity for empathy.

on-site practice allows candidates to experience, engage,
and play an active part in its community life.
In the three years of training, from September to June,
two weekly seminars meet consecutively on Fridays, 4:30-7:45

to psychoanalytic theory and technique, drawing from
drive, ego, object, self, relational, and archetypal
approaches. A second seminar focuses on child and adolescent

a strong base in child and adolescent psychoanalytic
psychotherapy.
Additional workshops, given by leading practitioners,
challenge the candidates and help them to further refine
